Current worksite: Bryansk Oblast
Head of expedition: Sergey Voronyatov
The Expedition was initiated in the late 1970s and implemented numerous projects in Ukraine and Moldova under the leadership of M.B. Shchukin.
The Slavic-Sarmatian Expedition, currently headed by S.V. Voronyatov, has conducted excavations on the Roman site Sinin VIII since 2010. The ruined monument was unearthed as a result of survey works performed by the Bryansk archaeologist N.Е. Yushchenko in 2002; the retrieved objects place Sinin VIII among the post-Zarubintsy Early Roman sites of the Pochep type. Apart from the 1st c. Early Roman deposits, the multi-period site proved to contain Late Roman layers comprising materials characteristic of Kiev-type monuments (3rd–4th c.). Quite unlike other sites across Bryansk Oblast, Sinin VIII provided some Chernyakhov pottery among its ceramic materials. Culturally, chronologically and geographically, Sinin VIII may be identified with Kiev-type sites of the second half of the 4th c. in the Desna Region around Chernigov (Aleksandrovka-I, Verkhnestrizhenskoye-II and Roishche) which usually contained Chernyakhov pottery. However, these sites are situated over 150 km southwest of Sinin VIII.The discovery of Chernyakhov pottery at such a considerable distance from its typical locations is a truly interesting phenomenon opening a new perspective on the interaction between the Chernyakhov and Kievan cultures of the Late Roman period.
